I have worked in Community Mental Health and Private Group Practice agencies providing outpatient therapy to support client wellbeing. More recently, I have worked to support wellbeing through Life Coaching, Training, Soul Care, and Spiritual Direction.

My counseling approach is integrative in nature. I utilize evidenced-based theories from the field of counseling and integrate it with faith and spirituality.

I received my clinical training at Asbury Theological Seminary and obtained a Master of Arts in Counseling degree in 2001. I pursued additional training in Family Therapy and Family Systems from Christian Theological Seminary in 2004-2005. Lastly, I have completed a Doctor of Ministry degree in Spiritual Formation from Ashland Theological Seminary in 2018.

My passion and desire is to assist clients in moving towards emotional, relational, and spiritual health. The phrase that captures what I am about is, “Healthy Life and Healthy Leader.”

I grew up in Northwestern Vermont, in Burlington, which is beautifully located on Lake Champlain. As such, I enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, cross country skiing, mountain biking, and exploring new places.

I typically tell clients, it is a sacred trust to be invited into someone’s life and have conversations about things that are significant and meaningful. Counseling and Soul Care is an investment and you are worth it!

+What methods or techniques do you use in individual and family counseling?

All therapy services will begin with a thorough assessment of symptoms you are experiencing and a Bio-Psycho-Social assessment. After this initial assessment I will discuss treatment options that can best address your presenting concerns and discuss the process of therapy services. In individual therapy I typically draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Family Systems. In Family therapy I typically draw from Brief Therapy Models, Structural Therapy, and Solution Focused Therapy. In Couple Skill Building I draw from the Gottman Method to assess the relationship, teach skills to manage conflict, and enhance the friendship and romance in the relationship.

+ What are the fees for counseling Services?

My hourly rate for intake and assessment is $175. My hourly rate for counseling services is $150 a session. I currently work with various insurance companies to be an in-network provider. Please call us for the list of providers we work with. If you are not in-network with me, you can self-pay for services with a $25 discounted rate. I can provide a bill for your services as an out-of-network provider and you can submit this to your insurance provider if you would like. I do not provide a sliding-scale for counseling services.

+ How do I start counseling services?

Contact the Christner Counseling and Soul Care confidential voice mailbox at 317-522-5748 with your name and phone number and we will contact you.

+ How long will I need to be in counseling?

At your initial assessment I will discuss your symptoms, assess level of functioning, and plan for treatment services. Based on these variables your length of treatment may vary. Your symptoms will be regularly assessed as part of ongoing treatment planning to ensure you are making progress.

+ Do you provide medication management, psychological testing, report writing, intensive outpatient services, or inpatient care?

I do not provide these services and function strictly as an outpatient provider. I can work with other providers with a written release of information.

+ Do you provide Christian counseling? Do you provide Bible Counseling?

I provide professional counseling as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Indiana. As such, clients can direct conversations about spirituality as they desire in therapy. As spirituality is often a helpful resource in life I would encourage clients to integrate spirituality into their therapy. I do not provide “Bible Counseling” as it is generally understood. I am a licensed professional counselor and therapist. My worldview is informed by a Judeo-Christian perspective. The two seminaries I have attended have Wesleyan and Brethren theological roots.

+ What is Soul Care, I have never heard of this term?

Soul Care is the practice of caring for the whole person, body, mind, and Spirit. For many people spirituality is an important part of life, so having dedicated time to have conversations about life, faith, and the spiritual journey are beneficial.

+ What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is the art of being present with another as they process their spiritual growth and development. The spiritual director is a trained listener who listens to person’s spiritual journey and to the Holy Spirit. The director may highlight themes, topics, and processes as a person is transformed into the likeness of Christ.

+ What is Leadership Development and what does this entail?

As a two time seminary survivor, I realize most seminaries do not cover coursework on personal spiritual formation, character, and the interior life of the leader. Leadership development with Soul Care will address the interior life of the leader through discussions on Emotional Intelligence, Healthy Leadership Culture, and Personal Spiritual Formation.

+ What is a Care Plan?

A care plan addresses the physical health, emotional health, spirituality, social relationships, and recreation needs of clients. This plan pulls together ideas in each of these areas in order to have a well-balanced life.

+ What is church wounding and recovery?

Many people have experienced hurt, rejection, or wounding from the church at some point in their lives. Soul Care services aim to assist in processing through the hurts and wounds, discussing identity, the image of God, and working towards a healthy view of God and ourselves.

+ What are the fees for Soul Care Services?

My hourly rate for Soul Care services is $100 per hour.

+ How do I start Soul Care services?

+ Does insurance cover Soul Care services?

No. Soul Care services are self-pay by the client.

+ Why should I pay for Soul Care services when I can get help from my local church for free?

It is a good question, for sure. Soul Care services with Christner Counseling and Soul Care ensures advanced and specialized training which enables me to work with you in a professional way. I have completed doctoral level coursework in: Formational Hermeneutics, Spiritual Direction, and Theological, Biblical, and Historical foundations for Spiritual Formation.
